With grateful thanks to Simon Goldberg for photographing and sending information about the small Jewish Cemetery in Mutare, in the eastern highlands – located in what is known as Yeoville section of Mutare. Below is a small map showing the location of the cemetery in Mutare. Simon photographed the cemetery and the graves towards the end of November 2023. He added a few notes to the pictures and explained in the three video clips which can be viewed at the bottom of the page. He explains how the late John Cinamon z”l insisted on building a wall around the cemetery in the early 1990s.
Morris Juster established a wholesale operation in Mutare, ultimately called M. Juster & Son. (George). A relative of theirs, Hirsch Goldenberg, worked with them in the company. He was a bachelor who lived at the Rhodes Trust Home (originally the Lady Kennedy Maternity Home where Simon was born).
The full story of the Goldberg family was published in a book called The Goldbergs of Leigh Ranch by W. E. Arnold (Author)
Simon wrote that whilst there were several families in the Eastern Highlands – stretching from Inyazura through to Mutare and Odzi – there was never an active Shul or minyan. He recalled how his family and others would often celebrate Pesach with the Buffensteins in Inyazura in the 1950s and 60s.
Other information provided by Simon including the fact that the grave of Abraham Welensky (brother of Sir Roy) is located outside the walled area of the Jewish Cemetery – probably because his was the earliest burial and a section was not yet designated.
